How Can We Learn Faster
Research says that one-third of our memory and intelligence is predetermined by genetics and biology, which means that two-thirds are in our control.
If there’s one skill to master in the 21st century, it is the ability to learn faster. It’s not a choice. It’s now a necessity. We are living in a historical period of the information age, digital age economy based primarily upon information technology. We have witnessed the shift from the traditional industry to an economy based on information and computerization, a Knowledge Economy that values problem-solving and critical thinking over mechanical skills.
We must be able to learn faster if we are to keep ahead. If knowledge is power, learning is our superpower.
The challenge is how to learn. There are classes on what to learn, Math, History, Chemistry but an inadequate amount of classes on how to learn, how to listen, how to take notes, how to study, how to read faster, how to focus and concentrate, how to remember and retain things.
While in school, we are taught three “Rs”: Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic. But how about the skills in remembering, retention, recall. As Socrates said, ” Learning is remembering?” So why is there no emphasis on these other skills while we are in school?
That being said, we have to take it upon ourselves to learn these other all-important skills if we are to keep up with learning what we need to know to be successful in this new information age. And it starts with understanding how our brain learns.
How Our Brain Works
How can we work our brains so we can have better focus, read faster, and remember things we want?
1. The art of learning and memory is a result of attention.
Children are the fastest learners. Why is that? It is because they are curious; they have attention. They don’t have the learned helplessness. They focus and play a lot. They are fully present, and when they engage, there is 100 % engagement. They fully show up.
2. Increase in learning and memory when combined with emotions.
Information combined with emotion becomes a long term memory. Like when you hear a song, and we are reminded of a memory. Or a scent brings thoughts of memories past.
3. All learning is state-dependent.
That the emotional state that you feel when you’re learning something gets anchored to the learning.
When we are in a state of boredom, we do not learn anything. If we put boredom on a scale from 1 to 10. Boredom is zero. Anything times zero is zero; that is why a lot of people don’t remember what they learn. They learn in boring states.
Learning How to Learn
We need to learn more in less time. We need a better memory. We need to have the ability to learn quickly. We need to adapt to the times we are living in. Digital overload, digital distraction, etc., so many things are vying for our attention. How do you get things done? Speed, because you could actually learn faster and actually have ease, confidence, peace of mind. Be able to succeed but also have a level of harmony inside of ourself, have clarity of thought.
The core concepts of the brain we need to know are Neurogenesis, meaning new growth, new brain cells, and Neuroplasticity, which means more connections.
Intelligence is not having a big brain. Einstein didn’t have a bigger brain. In certain areas of his brain, he had high connectedness. He did this through experiments where he would put himself in these brainwave states, specifically the theta state, which is a state of relaxed creativity. That’s the state that you’re in when you shower. Did you notice how when you’re showering, you come up with these wonderful ideas? You are inspired, you come up with new ideas, new things come out of you. You are in a creative state, and he had more connections in certain areas. You could promote building more connections by playing more and putting ourselves in the theta state.
But in reality, what is happening? We experience high blood pressure, compression of leisure time, more sleeplessness, or even if you have a little bit of time, you can’t enjoy it because your mind is still multitasking.
There is a digital distraction. People feel so distracted, and we can’t focus on just one thing anymore. This is a challenge that takes away from your ability to be present, your ability to get things done, and your ability to be profitable financially.
We live in an age where muscle power is not as crucial as you mind power. It’s not your brute strength, and it’s your brain strength. And the faster you can learn, indeed, the quicker you can earn, but not just financially but in all areas of your life, your health, your relationships. Your career will benefit.
Knowledge is power. They say with great power, comes great responsibility. But it is also true that with great power comes great responsibility. When you’re in a position of power, you have a great responsibility to would that power well. And the opposite is also true. With great responsibility comes great power. When taking responsibility, you can change things, transform things, and make things better.
As entrepreneurs, we value freedom. We want to be able to do what we want when we want, whenever we want, wherever we want. So why do we procrastinate and not get things done?
How your Physiology Affect your Psychology
One of the best ways of changing your state is by moving your body because as your body moves, your brain grooves. You create more neurogenesis, more neuroplasticity. What helps with this is novelty and nutrition. If you want to build muscle, you exercise and practice good nutrition. It is the same with our mental muscles. What are the ways of getting into these states and strategies to build mental muscles, mental strength? Physically, to be stronger, you want to be faster, agile, you could be that mentally also. Stronger, more agile, and more focused too.
What are the highest level states? The state of peace, love, gratitude, joy, compassion. But information is not enough. We all know what to do, common sense. People know what they should do to make things better, but there’s a discrepancy in terms of not gettings done.
Common sense is often not common practice. So how do we align our body and mind, which is the key to learning faster?
Keys to Learn Anything Faster
We acknowledge that knowledge is Power. Knowledge is Profit. So what are the keys to learning faster?
According to John Kwik, the keys to learning faster are the following:
B-elieve. If you believe you can or believe you can’t, either way, you’re right.” – Henry Ford
E-xercise. Physical exercise. As your body moves, the brain grooves.
F-orget. Your brain is like a parachute. It only works when it’s open.
A-ctive.Learning is not a spectator sport.
S-tate.All learning is state-dependent.
T-each. Learn to teach it to someone else. When we teach, we learn it twice
Learning and Our Inner Child
We know that children are the fastest learners. So we need to access our inner child. Learning anything faster occurs when we put attention, emotion, and be in a creative state and practice the B-E-F-A-S-T. This combination is the key to learning faster in this new world where knowledge is power.
