Self-Talk

Self-Talk

Each day we need to spend a few minutes talking to ourselves. When we do this every day, we build up our personal pool of inner strength that we can draw on throughout the day. It helps us to focus on what is important to us and what needs to be done. They help us live our daily lives, guided by the principles and values we have learned as we go through life. They help us face our weaknesses and conquer our fears.

Our best resource is right here within us. Looking inward and use ourselves to motivate us. Learn the right words to talk to ourselves to accomplish our goals. Self-talk is anything we say out loud or silently to ourselves or to someone else about ourselves.

Self-talk is our internal chatter. Self-talk is very powerful that they can affect our actions. They can either improve or damage our performance, boost or devastate our self-esteem.

In the book What to Say When You Talk to Yourself, Shad Helmstetter identifies four self-talk levels.

Four Levels of Self-Talk

Level 1:Self-talk of Negative Acceptance. Statements like, I can’t”, Things never go my way,

By the time we are 18, the average person has heard the comments, “No, you can’t,” 160,000 times?

Complaining is a common type of level 1 self-talk. It is useless and directly affects us physically and mentally.

Level 2:Self-talk of recognition and of the need to change. ” I need to” and “I should,” which works against us because we recognize a problem, but no solution is offered at this level.

It creates guilt, disappointment, and acknowledgment of our self-created inadequacies.

Level 3:Self-talk that recognizes a need to change, and we decide to do something about it. It is us telling ourselves we want to make a positive change in your life.

Level 4:self-talk is the best you, most effective, least used, and the most needed. We replace “I cannot” with “Yes I Can!”

Now that we know the four different levels, we need to aim to stop using levels 1 and 2 and begin using levels 3 and 4, turning our level 1 self-talk into more effective level 4 self-talk.

Examples of Positive Self-Talk

  • Today and every day, I believe in myself. I believe  I am capable of extraordinary things.
  • Today and every day, I manage my time productively. I use every minute to its fullest potential.
  • Today and every day, I value my physical, mental, and spiritual health. I always take care of myself.
  • Today and every day, I am a highly creative being. I recognize all of life’s amazing possibilities.
  • Every day and in every way, I am getting better and better.

Checklist to Self-Talk

  1. Make sure our self-talk is stated in the present tense. We want to build a complete picture of us already having accomplished what we are setting out to achieve. Doing this will help us get to where we want to be.
  2. Make our statement specific. Be detailed, with no vague statements. The more precise and detailed we can be, the more precise the directions we will be giving to our subconscious.
  3. Make sure our self-talk and images direct us to achieve what we want positively and healthily. Otherwise, the subconscious mind could use unhealthy and dangerous ways to get us what we want.
  4. Simple self-talk is the best kind of self-talk. Let us not make it complicated or too complex. Let us make it easy to remember.
  5. Create images that are possible and practical to achieve. Be realistic and realize what is possible.
  6. Be honest with ourselves. Accept where we are now, and decide where we want to go from here.
  7. Make sure our self-talk asks the best of us. Self-talk that motivates and helps us come out a winner.

In The End

When we self-talk, it is the true motivation because it is internal motivation. We need to become our motivators and be our internal coach. Our self-talk is our best source of inner strength and determination.

Let us speak to ourselves positively every day, speak affirmation, motivation every day until it becomes effortless, natural, and a habit—something that we do without thinking that it becomes spontaneous and effortless.
