10 Ways to Best Handle Disappointments in Life

It is hard to think of anything more disappointing than a setback. It’s one thing when an act of nature thwarts your plans, but it is a whole other story when people’s actions or inaction defeats us. When things do not go as planned or let down in the worst way possible, these ten tips will help you get back on your feet and recover from any disappointment that life throws your way.

10 Ways to Best Handle Disappointments

1. Don’t beat yourself up.

It is in your best interest to avoid beating yourself up over things that you can’t control. If you fail at something, try and take the time to reflect on why this happened to learn from it and move forward with more confidence moving forward. Remember that there are so many other things in life ahead of you. Do your best to make the most out of this setback and focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t.

2. Don’t focus on the negative.

Don’t let yourself get distracted by useless chatter that revolves around an event that you wish had never happened. Forcing yourself to identify with the negative things that others have to say will only make you feel worse, and in turn, you will feel bad for wasting your time and energy hearing what others say. This is a common mistake when faced with disappointment, but it needs to be stopped immediately to facilitate a correct course of action moving forward.

3. Don’t get caught up in the drama.

The reason why you have been disappointed is undoubtedly less important than how you plan to move forward from it. Please don’t waste your time getting caught up in the drama of a situation and instead do what you can to make yourself and others around you feel better, and then try to understand the situation in its entirety. While the case may be frustrating, it is in your best interest to put its problems behind you and instead reflect upon what can be done next.

4. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you.

It is important to remember that everything happens for a reason, even when it seems like there is no reason for it at all. It is typical for people to get angry or frustrated when they are disappointed, and it is in your best interest to avoid this sort of thinking. When you allow your anger to get the best of you, you ultimately hurt yourself more than the person who disappointed you. It is better to accept what it is and then move forward as quickly as possible.

5. Don’t quit just because things are difficult.

There is no use in going through a hard time and quitting when you get there. If there is something that you want to do, then keep doing it. Don’t give up just because things are difficult for you — instead, look at the situation as an opportunity. If this person failed you, it gives you another reason to make better decisions in the future, and it gives you the motivation to improve yourself and your life moving forward.

6. Don’t let others’ opinions sway your feelings about the situation.

Do you ever feel as though no one is on your side? When you begin to doubt yourself, the opinions of others can really get to your head and make it difficult to regain that feeling of confidence and trust in yourself. That is why it is important to remember to stick to what you believe in and have your own thinking and stand by it. It can be easy to let others influence you and throw your own opinions out the window because they may seem more “reasonable” than yours. However, you may end up regretting the idea of “going with the flow” rather than standing by what you believe in.

When this happens, you need to remember that others are not always going to agree with you and that is okay. If people do not agree with your opinion, they will voice their disagreement. However, just because someone disagrees with your opinion does not mean it is wrong. You are who you are and you should not change yourself just to please a certain group of people.

7. Don’t feel sorry for yourself.

Don’t allow yourself to wallow in the pit of self-pity because of something you have been disappointed with. It is essential to keep a level head in times like this, and it is sure to help you, in the long run, not to be entirely overcome by your emotions when you get over this disappointment. Instead, it would be best if you used the opportunity to make better, wiser decisions moving forward that you can use to prevent future setbacks.

8. Don’t give up on your goals.

You may have decided to give up your goals and dreams because they seemed impossible at the time. But don’t lose sight of that goal after it has been set aside for now. It would be best to continue to do what you can to reach these goals, even while dealing with your disappointment. Continue to focus on your plans and remember why you started them in the first place so that you can return to them when the time is right.

9. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

When things don’t work out the way you planned, it is easy to feel bad about yourself and even harder to think that others will feel the same way. You are not the only one to be disappointed, and you shouldn’t think that way. Instead, you should try and keep yourself in check as much as possible to make decisions based on facts. You aren’t entirely to fault for the situations in which you have been disappointed — but rather than allowing your self-esteem to get low, remind yourself of all of your good qualities and remind yourself that you can do this.

10. Don’t wallow in it too long.

It is important to remember when you suffer disappointment that it is normal. Get over it quickly. Instead of having a long session of self-pity, try and move forward with a positive attitude.

Living Life to the Fullest

Life can be cruel at times when it comes to what you have planned. But, it would be best if you didn’t let one thing deter you from moving forward in life and making the most out of everything else that is ahead of you. When things don’t work out the way that you had planned, try not to stop living life to the fullest — but instead go after your goals and dreams with more enthusiasm than ever before. Your time will come, and it is essential to be patient and wait for it to arrive because there will be other opportunities along the way you can use instead of regrets. If you stay positive enough, you will be able to move forward on your life goals and continue living life to the fullest.
