Becoming A Leader

I just finished watching this movie about a man who lead his army to win a war against all the odds. He was a man who was brilliant in his thinking and strategic in his actions. His vision was way ahead of his time, and his plans were well-thought of. He empowered the weak and made them believe in his vision of fighting for a better life. He was a great leader.

After watching it, I thought to myself, What Makes a Great Leader? Are Leaders born or made? How would I define leadership?

To me, leadership is a verb. It is the process by which one influences others to work on set objectives or goals. A great leader provides guidance to work together and shows the right path to achieve set objectives.

The term “leader” first appeared in the English language from the 1300s, and its meaning was “to travel” or “to show the way,” meaning leaders must show a new way towards a common goal.

Is it nature or nurture?

There are theories we can reference to discuss the question of whether leaders are born or made?

One theory is that leaders are born. That there is a genetic factor to leadership. It asserts that people either have leadership qualities or not. Leaders are born.

Many great leaders have emerged over our throughout our history. There are many examples of this. In more modern times, people like Mahatma Gandhi, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, and Dr. Martin Luther King are few. So were these people born leaders, or they became leaders?

The “Great Man” theory.  This was the first theory of leadership that emerged in an attempt to describe the existence of leadership. Those people who become great leaders were destined to rise to leadership. They were born to be leaders. It suggests that great leaders were naturally skilled and inherently born to bring about change in the world. This thought was popularised in the 1840s by Carlyle.

In later years, Spencer (1896) asserted that great leaders are the products of the society they live in and that their actions resulted from the social conditions built before their lifetime.

Spencer (1896) points out that “the genesis of a great man depends on the long series of complex influences which has produced the race in which he appears, and the social state into which that race has slowly grown. Before he can remake his society, his society must make him.” Spencer is saying that the environment in which one has grown up prepares one to become a leader. It is the learning from all these experiences that leads one to want to make things better. This kind of society impacts the creation of great leaders. Like in the movie, the harsh times inspired the man to lead the people.

Another interesting statement by Lombardi is, “Leaders aren’t born. They are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal.”

I myself believe that nurturing skills and growing them is the key to successful leadership. Basketball superstar Micheal Jordan said this “Everybody has talent, but ability takes hard work.” From this, we can say that everyone has the ability and that anyone can grow and develop into someone who is skilled and capable of becoming a great leader if they want to. It is a choice one makes.

Everyone has innate abilities that can be nurtured and developed. If these so-called leadership traits are developed, then one can become a great leader. Goleman (1995) focused his research on four basic competencies. These four competency areas included self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and social skills.

People who showed higher levels of ability in these areas were considered to have higher emotional intelligence. Research also suggests that Emotional Intelligence plays a very important role in determining leadership success in life.

The Behavioural Theory promotes the fact that anyone can be a leader through the process of TEACHING, LEARNING, and OBSERVING (CFI, 2019). Thus, the set of skills that an effective leader entails can be attained through training, perceiving, practicing, and experiencing the role over time.

Certain character traits are common among great leaders. Warren Bennis, in his book Becoming a Leader, said that becoming a leader requires:

  1. Constant learning and unceasing curiosity. A persistent desire for self-development and an open mind to see the world.
  2.  A compelling vision for the future: leaders first define their reality (what they believe is possible), then set about to manage their dream.
  3. To develop the ability to communicate that vision and inspire others to follow it.
  4. Tackle and face uncertainty and take on risk: a degree of daring.
  5. Personal integrity: self-knowledge, candor, maturity, welcoming criticism.
  6. They are real. Great leaders learn from others but are not made by others.
  7. Reinvention: to create new things sometimes involves recreating yourself. Your genes and environment may influence you, but leaders take all their influences and create something unique.
  8. Devote time to think and reflect, which brings answers and produces resolutions.
  9. Passion for the promises of life: a belief in the best, for yourself and others.
  10. Recognize success in small, every day increments and joys, not waiting years for the Big Success to arrive.
  11. Utilize the context of your life, rather than surrendering to it.

Conclusion

Like any other talent or ability, I believe that anybody can learn a skill such as leadership. A small number of leaders may be born with individual traits that lend themselves to leadership. But even though one has leadership traits, if one does not nurture and use them, then it remains just a trait in the person.

Still, leadership itself can be learned, especially by dedicated individuals who display an interest in doing so.

They know the traits of a leader and strive to embody those traits. They learn the skills, knowledge, and attitudes of a great leader and
live them. They lead people to make things better than what it is right now. They inspire change.
